Karl Masks was born in June 2020 from a video call about storytelling, consumption rhetorics and construction of meaning.

For each mask of any type you buy from us, we give 20% of our net profit to the MedShare relief efforts.

Until they hit $500K, Threadless will also donate 100% of the net proceeds that they earn for each sale.

We know. You can't buy purpose.

Current times are as wild as rivers in spring, and we believe we must take this as something good. Economic instability doesn't feel like a menace when it comes from a system that perpetuates inequality. If it falls, we will have the opportunity to build something fairer to all of us upon its ashes. People that lack money are directly proportional to the lack of purpose of those who hoard it. And you can't buy purpose.

Cloth masks as a symbol of social responsibility.

The COVID-19 crisis has taught us that health care should be an actively enforced human right. Under the current system, we must expect others to take responsibility so we can curb the spread of the virus. In countries like the US or Brasil, were social distancing is not actively enforced by the politicians in power, the virus is spreading like wildfire and killing people by thousands, especially those in poorer communities with less access to health care. Thus, we want to enforce the use of cloth masks in public spaces as a way to show, at an individual level, that we actively care and support for collective health.

Sustenaibility and activism as fashion choices.

Since the begging of the COVID-19 outbreak, face masks have become the new novelty product on which to profit on. From classic fashion brands to small streetwear companies, we've seen thousands of different models appear. We won't criticize that as it speaks for itself (and we're also kind of doing it). The difference is, we aren't a fashion brand that has been profiting of people's desire to look cool. We're here to provide an edge to the mask-wearing outbreak, which as you already know, we want to enforce. We ensure that all the statements made by wearing one of our masks have behind a fair profit structure and solid environmental and social sustainability enforcement on the manufacturing and fulfilment processes. You can read our frequently asked questions below to learn more about this.

Why should I wear a cloth face mask?

  • Though they have shown ineffective on protecting the wearer from COVID-19, cloth face masks serve a different purpose.
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now advising to voluntarily wear a basic cloth or fabric face mask when you go out, to help curb the spread of the coronavirus.
  • They also recommend that, due to the shortage of medical PPE, we all make an effort to reserve N95 medical-grade masks for hospital workers.
  • In other words, the reasons you should be wearing a cloth face mask in public, crowded places are as follows:

  • So you can show that you care for the health of others around you.
  • So you can prevent others from getting in contact with the micro-sprays of saliva we all involuntarily spit around, thus, protecting the others from yourself, either if you have COVID-19 or you don't (something you probably are not sure of).
  • So you can make sure medical workers are getting the proper medical equipment needed to take care of people while not getting infected themselves.

Will your face masks protect me from coronavirus?

  • The use of cloth face masks does not protect you against COVID-19 and is not intended to replace recommended measures to stop the community spread, such as social distancing, washing your hands properly, and refraining from touching your face.
  • Our masks are NOT intended for medical or healthcare workers, and should not be confused with N95 respirators or other personal protective equipment (PPE). We make no warranties, either express or implied that these face masks prevent infection or the transmission of viruses or diseases.
  • As of April 10, 2020, CDC notes the following concerning cloth face masks:
  • Cloth face masks are not surgical masks or n-95 respirators.
  • Do not place them on children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing or is unconscious, disabled or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.
  • Wash routinely, depending on the frequency of use.
  • Be careful not to touch your eyes, nose, and mouth when removing and wash hands immediately after.

How do I clean my KARL MASK?

  • Reusable and machine washable, you should properly sanitize our masks after each use as per CDC guidelines:
  • Machine-wash them in warm water using an all-purpose detergent between each wearing.
  • Tumble-dry at a low-temperature setting.
  • Do not use fabric softener or overly dry.
  • For additional cleaning, use a steam cleaner or the steam setting on your iron. Press or steam clean both sides at a moderate temperature.

Where are your face masks made?

  • Our manufacturing partners make every effort to ensure compliance with rigorous social and environmental standards.
  • All of our masks get made to order with printing done in the USA, which eliminates waste and gives opportunities to the local economy.
  • Threadless makes sure they partner only with companies who manufacture in the US and internationally in a no-sweat-shop, humane, and ethical way.
  • Items made overseas are manufactured in updated facilities adhering to the International Labour Organization's Conventions (ILO) and Recommendations, which promotes rights at work, encourages decent employment opportunities and enhances social protections.
  • You can read more about the standards set out by the ILO here.
